The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, in support of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia’s Mayflower Marathon, is hosting the 6th annual “Little Hands, Big Difference: Day of Gratitude” event to support those fighting hunger this holiday season.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Saturday, November 19, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the Target wing of Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach.
The Little Hands, Big Difference event is designed to teach our youth the benefits of voluntarism and actively involve children between 5 and 12 years of age. Aligning with our mission to promote voluntarism, this event brings together members of the JLNVB and local children to collect, sort, and donate food to members of our community that struggle daily with food insecurity and hunger, as well as putting together toiletry kits for children in need (donations are appreciated), creating a gratitude quilt, making homemade gifts for loved ones, and writing thank you notes.
Little Hands, Big Difference is a day dedicated to kids and learning that volunteering, giving thanks, and eating healthy are not just important, but FUN!
Over 70 children participated in last year’s event making it our largest and most successful event to date. In addition to creating a volunteer event that involved children as well as adults, the event contributed to the overall success of the Mayflower Marathon, which collected enough donations to provide 429,000 Thanksgiving meals to the needy in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area.
