posted by on

Each month, we will be highlighting the members that make up each Junior League Council. This month, we are featuring the members of the Community Council.

Mila Radovic, Community Vice President

Coming Soon!

Emily Matisko, Assistant Community Vice President

(1) How Long have you been a member of the Junior League? This is my first year as an active member, so I guess I’ve technically been a member for about 6 months! Or, a year and a half if you’re counting my new member year.

(2) What has been your favorite placement? My placement as assistant vice president is my first, but I’m really enjoying it so far! Even with all the changes that have taken place this year, it’s been so inspiring to see our committees take action and find creative ways to serve our communities. I’m so grateful to be a part of the program planning and implementation process, and I’ve already learned so much even in just a few months.

(3) What activities, hobbies have kept you busy during the pandemic? I’ve been turning to yoga, painting, running, cooking, and lots of virtual game nights with friends and family! My boyfriend also just got a new puppy, so I’m spending a lot of time playing with her.

Elevate to Educate Committee

Sara Langford, Chair

(1) How Long have you been a member of the Junior League? 2 1/2 years!

(2) What has been your favorite placement? I’m biased, but Elevate to Educate/Community Events chair! My favorite community event!

(3) What activities, hobbies have kept you busy during the pandemic? Hobbies, are becoming a crazy plant lady and just got a peloton and loving it!!! Activities have been taking care of our newborn baby girl, Charlotte Marie and soaking in all the baby snuggles and adventure walks!

Amanda Green, Chair-Elect

(1) How Long have you been a member of the Junior League? 1st year active

(2) What has been your favorite placement? I really loved my new member year, but I am enjoying my placement on the E2E committee.

(3) What activities, hobbies have kept you busy during the pandemic? I’m in graduate school, so that took up a lot of my time. I also returned to work back in June, so it has been business as usual for me since then. When I do have free time, you can find me lounging with my fur baby, Kimber or my 3-month old nephew, Atlas.

Tracey Buryn, Member

(1) How Long have you been a member of the Junior League? I am a first year active.

(2) What has been your favorite placement? Being a first year active, this is my first placement, but I love the potential that we have to keep the League strong by coming up with creative ways to re-think our fundraising ideas.

(3) What activities, hobbies have kept you busy during the pandemic? Given that I work for the court system I only had about a month away from my office.  However, I am finding since I am not out going to events it has given me time to process what “stuff” I really need (or don’t need) in my life. I have learned a lot about Kon Mari.  I have also found myself at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens many Sunday afternoons, with my puppy Jake (okay, so he is 11 years old… but he is still my puppy).

Women’s Initiatives Committee

Jackie Spainhour, Chair-Elect

(1) How Long have you been a member of the Junior League? I am a 1st year active

(2) What has been your favorite placement? My only placement has been as WIC Co-Chair, but I have loved it. I really enjoy the opportunity to be a part of making meaningful progress in eradicating period poverty in our area. Plus, I work with some powerful women.

(3) What activities, hobbies have kept you busy during the pandemic? During the pandemic I have done a lot of solo antiquing for items for my job, which is at a historic house museum. It is somewhat nice to shop with small crowds. I have also been raising my second tiny human- is being pregnant during a pandemic a hobby? It certainly was an experience!

Verena Weinstein, Member

(1) How Long have you been a member of the Junior League? I am a seventh year active.

(2) What has been your favorite placement? That’s a tough one as I have had several placements that I truly enjoyed. I would have to pick New Member Mentor. After five years in the League, it was refreshing to see the League through the eyes of new members and to get to know new members who I might otherwise have never met. It was a very fun and rewarding placement.

(3) What activities, hobbies have kept you busy during the pandemic? Online yoga and HIIT workouts, home projects such as organizing and cleaning out closets, pulling weeds (surprisingly satisfying – who knew!) and reading.

During the pandemic, I have embraced the outdoors.  I’ve taken up jogging and learned how to ride a bike at 29 years old!  Pedaling  around Ghent is now one of my favorite things to do.  The picture I included is me nearing the end of the ERT.

(3) What activities, hobbies have kept you busy during the pandemic? I’ve been reading a lot during the pandemic and trying to get outside (while socially distanced!) as much as possible!
