During the month of August, members of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. participated in the annual WAVY-TV Operation School Supplies event along with other partners Office Depot, Langley Federal Credit Unions, the US Navy, the Girl Scouts, and more. Generosity from the local community was outstanding this year as drop boxes were filled to the brim with pencils, notebooks, book bags, calculators, and other items to ensure that less fortunate children of Hampton Roads are prepared for the 2011-2012 school year.
JLNVB members picked up supplies at Office Depot locations in the Hilltop, Greenbrier, and Janaf areas of the Southside and delivered them to the Stuff the Bus events that were held on Friday, August 5th at the Janaf Shopping Center and Friday, August 19th at the Hilltop Plaza Shopping Center. JLNVB members assisted with the collection and sorting of supplies at the Hilltop location. Don Roberts, of WAVY-TV, was the fun host of the day and was broadcasting live throughout the morning. JLNVB members and troop members of the Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast even got to do a little school supply shopping after a generous donor brought by $1,000 in cash to help with the drive.
THANK YOU to all who participated and made this community event such a success for our local children. We would also like to thank Anthony Rivera, owner of the Hilltop Edible Arrangements, who kindly donated fresh fruit and chocolate covered strawberries for the volunteers at the Stuff the Bus event.
