President's Message

The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. is a civic leadership organization for women looking for a complete volunteer experience that includes impacting our community through meaningful service projects, excellent leadership training, and social networking.  The JLNVB is an organization with approximately 500 women dedicated to the mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the lives of women and children in Hampton Roads through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Our membership is open to women of all races, religions, and cultural origins who possess an interest in and a commitment to voluntarism.

The women of the JLNVB are a diverse group of volunteers, from mothers who work raising children to wome n who work in various professions including engineers, artists, doctors, dentists, nurses, realtors, attorneys, financial professionals, scientists, sales and marketing professionals, and entrepreneurs.   Our commonality is our commitment to bettering the community in which we live by becoming trained civic leaders. There are many worthwhile organizations where you can volunteer, but I can’t think of one that offers members and community partners as much as the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.

It’s a great source of pride that we are celebrating our 85th year of service to Hampton Roads and tha
t we have helped establish many worthy programs and partnered with local organizations that benefit our community such as ForKids, Edmarc, Excellence Girls’ Club, Growing up Great, Career Closet, Academy of Music, Touch Tanks at the Virginia Aquarium, Be a Reader (BEAR) Literacy Program, the d’Art Center, the Chrysler Museum, the American Red Cross, St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children, the Virginia Zoo, Cerebral Palsy of Virginia, and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s “Music in the Schools” program. Currently, we dedicate our volunteer and financial resources to our Healthy Kids Initiative. We have joined forces with many other local organizations to help children in our community have access to resources necessary to learn to lead a healthy lifestyle. Many activities are underway in Hampton Roads to prevent or reduce childhood obesity, but more work needs to be done!  With our community partners, we continue to help bring unique programs and projects in which children and parents can learn to embrace a lifestyle centered on wellness.

It’s been said, “When the Junior League gets behind something, communities change.” As the 2010-2011 President, I wholeheartedly agree and I want to thank our members and our partners for their time, energy, and enthusiastic support.  I’m looking forward to a great year!

My Best,

Kimberly
